Temperature converter

Temperature scales have different zero points, so conversions add or subtract an offset as well as scaling. We handle that exactly.

1 degree Celsius = 33.8 degrees Fahrenheit

How it’s calculated

°F = °C × 9/5 + 32

  • Temperature scales have different zero points, so the conversion adds or subtracts an offset as well as scaling.
  • 1 °C = 33.8 °F · 1 °F = -17.22222222 °C

  1. Use the exact scale definitions

Temperature scales have different zero points, so this is not a single multiplication: it adds or subtracts an offset as well as scaling. The definitions are exact (0 °C = 273.15 K; 1 °F = 5/9 K; absolute zero = −459.67 °F). Source: BIPM SI Brochure (9th ed.); NIST SP 811 / Handbook 44.

  2. Step 1: scale

Scale by 9/5 (a Fahrenheit degree is 5/9 the size of a Celsius degree).

  3. Step 2: add the offset

Add 32 to shift the zero point (water freezes at 32 °F).

  4. Round the answer

    Rounded to 5 significant figures.

Answer: 33.8 °F · Temperature readings include an offset; for a temperature difference use only the scale factor.

Frequently asked questions

Which temperature units can I convert?

degrees Celsius (°C), degrees Fahrenheit (°F), kelvin (K), degrees Rankine (°R).

How accurate are the results?

Every unit is stored with its exact defining factor (NIST SP 811, NIST Handbook 44 or the BIPM SI Brochure). Calculations use double-precision arithmetic and are rounded only for display, to 5 significant figures by default (trailing zeros dropped, so 1 km shows as 1000 m). You can choose Auto (up to 10 digits), fixed decimals or more significant figures, or switch to scientific or engineering notation.

Why is temperature conversion not a simple multiplication?

Celsius and Fahrenheit have different zero points, so converting requires an offset as well as a scale factor: °F = °C × 9/5 + 32. Kelvin and Rankine start at absolute zero.
