Density converter
Mass per unit volume. Water is about 1 000 kg/m³ (1 g/cm³, 62.4 lb/ft³); steel is about 7 850 kg/m³.
US customary and British imperial units with the same name differ in size. Each is labelled US or UK in the unit list.
1 kilogram per cubic metre = 0.062428 pounds per cubic foot
How it’s calculated
lb/ft³ = kg/m³ × 0.06242796058
- Multiply the value in kilograms per cubic metre by 0.06242796058.
- To go back, divide by 0.06242796058 (or multiply by 16.01846337).
- 1 kg/m³ = 0.06242796058 lb/ft³ · 1 lb/ft³ = 16.01846337 kg/m³

Find the conversion factor
By definition 1 lb/ft³ = 16.0184633739601 kg/m³. Source: BIPM SI Brochure (9th ed.); NIST SP 811 / Handbook 44.
Multiply by the factor written as a fraction
Put kg/m³ in the denominator so it cancels, leaving lb/ft³.
Calculate (unrounded)
Round the answer
Rounded to 5 significant figures.
Answer: 0.062428 lb/ft³

Frequently asked questions
Which density units can I convert?
kilograms per cubic metre (kg/m³), grams per cubic centimetre (g/cm³), grams per millilitre (g/mL), kilograms per litre (kg/L), grams per litre (g/L), pounds per cubic foot (lb/ft³), pounds per cubic inch (lb/in³), pounds per US gallon (lb/gal (US)), pounds per imperial gallon (lb/gal (UK)), slugs per cubic foot (slug/ft³).
How accurate are the results?
Every unit is stored with its exact defining factor (NIST SP 811, NIST Handbook 44 or the BIPM SI Brochure). Calculations use double-precision arithmetic and are rounded only for display, to 5 significant figures by default (trailing zeros dropped, so 1 km shows as 1000 m). You can choose Auto (up to 10 digits), fixed decimals or more significant figures, or switch to scientific or engineering notation.
Why do US and UK (imperial) units give different answers?
Several units share a name but not a size. A US gallon is exactly 3.785411784 L while an imperial gallon is exactly 4.54609 L; a US fluid ounce is about 29.57 mL and a UK fluid ounce about 28.41 mL. Units are labelled US or UK throughout so you can pick the right one.
