Data storage converter
Decimal units (kB, MB, GB) use powers of 1 000; binary units (KiB, MiB, GiB) use powers of 1 024. That is why a "1 TB" drive shows as about 931 GiB.
1 gigabyte = 1,000 megabytes
How it’s calculated
MB = GB × 1000
- Multiply the value in gigabytes by 1000.
- To go back, divide by 1000 (or multiply by 0.001).
- 1 GB = 1,000 MB · 1 MB = 0.001 GB

Find the conversion factor
By definition 1 GB = 8000000000 bit and 1 MB = 8000000 bit, so 1 GB = 1000 MB. Source: IEC 80000-13 (decimal and binary prefixes).
Multiply by the factor written as a fraction
Put GB in the denominator so it cancels, leaving MB.
Calculate (unrounded)
Round the answer
Rounded to 5 significant figures.
Answer: 1000 MB
1 GB in other units
Batch convert GB → MB
- 1 GB = 1000 MB
- 5 GB = 5000 MB
- 10 GB = 10000 MB
- 25 GB = 25000 MB

Frequently asked questions
Which data storage units can I convert?
bits (bit), bytes (B), kilobytes (kB), megabytes (MB), gigabytes (GB), terabytes (TB), petabytes (PB), kibibytes (KiB), mebibytes (MiB), gibibytes (GiB), tebibytes (TiB), kilobits (kbit), megabits (Mbit), gigabits (Gbit).
How accurate are the results?
Every unit is stored with its exact defining factor (NIST SP 811, NIST Handbook 44 or the BIPM SI Brochure). Calculations use double-precision arithmetic and are rounded only for display, to 5 significant figures by default (trailing zeros dropped, so 1 km shows as 1000 m). You can choose Auto (up to 10 digits), fixed decimals or more significant figures, or switch to scientific or engineering notation.
What is the difference between MB and MiB?
MB (megabyte) is decimal: 1 000 000 bytes. MiB (mebibyte) is binary: 1 048 576 bytes. Drive makers use decimal units while many operating systems report binary ones, which is why a 1 TB drive shows about 931 GiB.
